Your Mind is a Maze of Mystery comes from a comment one of my sisters made to our other sister in response to hearing about a dream she had. While this piece is not about dreams per se (nor is it about her particular dream), it takes a cue in structure and material from dreaming in general. In dreams and sometimes in waking life, the connections our brains make do not always make sense to us. Presumably there is an underlying logic or reason for what goes on in our dreams or why one thought leads to another, even though they may seem unrelated. And since I'm sure you've been wondering what was actually said since you started reading this program note (reprinted with the authors' permission): "I had a really traumatizing dream that you all joined a totalitarian regime and were talking about how freedom wasn't really that important." "Your mind is a maze of mystery." Your Mind is a Maze of Mystery was written for Transient Canvas. The tenor saxophone version was arranged for Terminus Ensemble and premiered in June 2018 in Atlanta during the YInMn Festival. |
